The town of Clifden and the beautiful surrounding Connemara

Clifden is a vibrant thriving town on The Wild Atlantic Way and is known as the capital of Connemara. It was founded in 1812 by a local landlord John D’Arcy. Clifden nestles between the rugged wild peaks of the Twelve Bens Mountains and the dramatic waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The town’s skyline is dominated by the twin spires of its two Churches, St Joseph’s and Christ Church.

Renowned for its good food, music and hospitality, Clifden has an excellent choice of award winning restaurants and your evenings can spent with music, song, dance and the craic with the friendly locals in one its many traditional pubs or bars.

Nearby attractions include the magnificent Victorian Kylemore Abbey and gardens, the scenic Sky Road which takes you amongst the hills overlooking Clifden Bay, Killary Harbour (Ireland’s only fjord), ferry trips out to the beautiful island of Inishbofin, Derrrigimlagh the site of the first non-stop transatlantic flight crossing in 1919 made by Alcock and Brown, the site of the Marconi radio station where the first transatlantic radio messages were received and exchanged in 1907, wonderful Connemara beaches and The Connemara National Park.
